The talented team of builders and carpenters at Dimension Building love a good challenge.
So when one of their clients came to them with an exciting design featuring a lot of glass, plenty of steel and a great deal of schist, they knew it was something they wanted to tackle, Dimension Building director Richard Phiskie said.
“When we saw the plans for this house, we knew it was going to be a challenge. There was not much tolerance because it’s quite a slimline design with floor to ceiling windows. (But at Dimension Building) we love to be tested and we never say no. We’re passionate about what we do, so if you have a design idea, we will make it happen.”
Located in Timaru, the 348 square-metre home is one of the Dimension Building’s four entries in this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. Unassuming from the road, it’s not until you get closer that you realise how spectacular the four-bedroom home is, Richard said.
“When you drive up the road you only get a sneak peek of it, and it doesn’t look like anything flash. It’s not until you come up the driveway that it hits you in the face how unique and cool the house is.”
The split-level designed house has many unique features, including steps that take you down to the front door, and a pond in the entranceway that extends around the home.
The design also embraces sleek lines throughout, with schist used inside and out – a move which has added to the home’s rustic vibe. The use of schist, which is a cladding system made from natural stone, is becoming increasingly popular in the building industry, Richard said.
The spectacular floor to ceiling windows look out over luscious South Canterbury farmland, with views extending from Aoraki Mount Cook to Mount Peel in Geraldine. The 3-bathroom house also features a massage room and waiting area, to allow the current owner the opportunity to run her own business from home.
A focal point of the home is its modern and stylish kitchen which features all the mod-cons expected in a new build. However, the highlight of this room is the magnificent custom-made kitchen bench which doubles as a breakfast bar.
In keeping with the industrial style feel of the home, a stunning steel pergola dominates the outdoor area, with a wooden hot tub nestled smartly underneath.
The stunning home, which was completed in December 2021, was built by five of the company’s talented tradesmen – Matt, Brodie, Nick, Callum and Jack. The team will find out in October if their handiwork has met the judges’ expectations.
The Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards celebrate the very best in residential building. The nationwide competition sees more than 300 homes assessed by a panel of experts, with numerous awards up for grabs including the coveted National Supreme House of the Year. In previous years, the team at Dimensions Building have had a lot of success at the awards, winning a total of 36 accolades to date. Past wins include three national awards, six gold awards, a lifestyle award for design recognition, a craftsmanship award for dedication to craftsmanship, three category wins and an overall House of the Year Supreme award.
Despite the company’s previous success in the House of the Year Awards, for Richard the wins are not about collecting trophies.
“It’s really good for the guys to see the reward for the effort put in. They all take pride in what they do. And they care about what they do. Building is quite visual which is probably why we love our job – you start with some lines on paper and then get to see it
created.”
